Rio de Janeiro, often shortened simply to Rio, is one of the most unique cities in South America. As the Portuguese founded Brazil in 1565 and Rio is the capital of Brazil, a lot of Portuguese influence can still be seen here. For example, unlike the rest of South America, the first language in Brazil is Portuguese.

Christ the Redeemer
Firstly, we have to start out by mentioning one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Christ the Redeemer. Christ the Redeemer is a statue of Jesus Christ that towers over the city as it is 98-feet tall and on top of Mount Corcovado. The statue was built in 1938 and has become a huge symbol of Christianity not only in Brazil, but worldwide.
You can see Christ the Redeemer from almost any point in Rio, but you need to go to the top to get an up-close view. To get to the top of Mount Corcovado, you can either take a train, a van, or hike. Most people opt for the train because the ride up through the Atlantic Forest is an experience in itself.
In addition to the train, only official vans are allowed to the top of the mountain, so that is a cheaper option. The cheapest option of all is to hike, which will take you around an hour and a half each way. As Christ the Redeemer is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world, it will likely be busy. Aim to go as soon as it opens or later in the afternoon to get the best view.
Copacabana Beach
Rio is one of the best places for any traveler to visit as it is the perfect mix of city and nature with great parks and beautiful beaches. Our favorite beach is the famous Copacabana Beach. It is a 4-km long beach in the heart of Rio alive with locals and tourists alike.
There are plenty of beach bars and restaurants that you can visit, but our favorite part of Copacabana Rio de Janeiro is the vendors that come around with fresh food and drinks. Simply wave at one and they will come over to show you what they’re selling. Anything from homemade empanadas, strong caipirinhas, buttery corn, and ice-cold drinks can be found on the beach.
If Copacabana is too busy for you, head down the street to the equally beautiful Ipanema Beach that has all the same amenities.
Sugarloaf Mountain
Just like you can see Christ the Redeemer from most parts of Rio, you’ll also be able to see Sugarloaf Mountain as it is over 1,299 feet above the harbor. The best part of Sugarloaf Mountain is the journey to the top. Visitors must take two cable cars to the top which takes only three minutes. The bubble-shaped glass cable car offers a great view of the city on your way up.
We recommend going up to Sugarloaf mountain for sunset where you’ll get a great view of the city with the sun setting over the water in the distance.
Watch a Football Match
Even if you don’t love football, we still recommend going to see a football match at Maracanã Stadium if you can. Football is certainly part of Brazil’s national identity as the national football team has won the FIFA World Cup tournament five times. With over 12 major football teams in Brazil, you’re sure to see a good match no matter who’s playing during your stay.
Ilha Fiscal
Although Brazil is part of mainland South America, it has a huge coastline, hence the beautiful beaches are mentioned earlier. Another great thing this brings is islands! There are tons of stunning islands to visit from Brazil and Rio itself, namely, Ilha Fiscal.
Ilha Fiscal is not a traditional island as all that is on it is a palace museum. Ilha Fiscal was used as the headquarters for the Brazilian Custom Service in the past. Today, tourists can take a guided tour via boat or bus to visit the palace. You must be with a guided tour to visit, but it is a great way to get a little bit of history into your trip.
Admire the Architecture
As Brazil was colonized by Portugal, there is still a great amount of Portuguese influence in Rio, especially in the architecture. There is a great mix of old Portuguese-style buildings and more modern ones throughout the city.
One of our favorite buildings in Rio is the Royal Portuguese Reading Room. It is a gorgeous Neo-Manueline-style library with huge stained glass windows and expansive galleries.
On the other hand, if you want to get more in touch with Rio’s religious side, visit the Rio de Janeiro Cathedral. The architecture of the cathedral is interesting as it was based on Mayan pyramids, so it is a similar shape. Inside, stunning stained glass windows will catch your eye. The cathedral is still used for mass, so just be respectful if you go inside.
For those who want to see Rio’s modern side, the Museum of Contemporary Art is the place to be.
