Firenze, Italy, which is Florence in Italian, is one of the most culturally and historically significant cities in the world. It is the capital city of Italy’s Tuscany region and was once a thriving Roman city. Many historians refer to Florence as the birthplace of the Renaissance movement. This is because many famous philosophers, artists, and scientists were born here.
Even if history doesn’t interest you very much, Florence is still a stunning city to visit. There is ancient architecture, delicious food, and beautiful art everywhere. You’ll definitely want to add Florence to your travel bucket list after seeing these unique pictures!
Florence Cathedral
Florence Cathedral, better known as the Duomo Florence, is one of the most well-known cathedrals in the world. It is a massive architectural feat as it can be seen from almost anywhere in Florence. It is especially impressive since initial construction started in 1436. The design of this cathedral is so intricate. It is covered in white marble with polychrome designs and a stunning red dome on top. This sets it apart in Florence’s skyline.
The dome is so unique and grand that it was actually the biggest one in the world until 1881. You can even climb up to the top of it if you’re okay with climbing 463 steps. If you’re able to climb to the top, we definitely recommend it as it has one of the best views of Florence!
Despite its age, Florence Cathedral is still an active religious site. So, just remember to dress and act respectfully if you visit. Avoid visiting on Sunday as well if you aren’t interested in attending mass.
Ponte Vecchio and the Arno River
Although Venice is the city in Italy best known for its canals and rivers, Florence has its fair share of beautiful water and bridges as well. The Ponte Vecchio, meaning Old Bridge in Italian, is a stone, arch bridge that allows people to get from one side of the Arno River to the other. The original bridge dates back to Roman times, around 996, but it has since been rebuilt.
Around the Arno River and Ponte Vecchio, there are tons of cute shops, jewellers, art dealers, cafes, and restaurants for you to enjoy. Taking a stroll along the river and across the Ponte Vecchio is a great way to spend a few hours in Florence. If you want to get into (or onto) the Arno River, that’s also an option! You can go stand-up paddleboarding, take a riverboat tour, kayaking, and even rafting at certain points of the river!
Piazza della Repubblica
Europe, and especially Italy, is well-known for having bustling squares throughout their cities. One of the main squares in Florence is the Piazza Della Repubblica in the center of the city. It’s a stunning square, but not a reflection of what it was originally like in Roman times. In the 18th century, the Italian government destroyed the Medieval buildings around the square to clean it up.
Today, it’s still a bustling square with interesting architecture, so it’s definitely worth a visit. It’s also home to many street artists and shows in the evenings if you’re looking for some free evening entertainment. There’s also a cute, picturesque carousel in the square. Perfect for adults and children alike!
If you’re looking for more traditional squares, Piazza del Duomo and Piazza Della Signoria are both beautiful. They contain tons of classical art, grand architecture, and bubbling fountains.
Admire the art and sculptures
As Florence was home to some of the world’s best artists, there is plenty of art and sculptures to see throughout the city. If you don’t have the time or money to go into the many art galleries, don’t worry! There’s plenty of great art you can see for free around the city. For example, one of our favorites is the Fountain of Neptune in the Piazza dell Signoria. Cosimo I de’ Medici commissioned it in 1559 and it has since been restored after being vandalized over the years. While you’re in Piazza Della Signoria, keep an eye out for the Medici lions and statues of Hercules and Caucus as well. These sculptures are all over 500 years old and free to see!
Uffizi Gallery is one of our favorite art museums in the city. It is considered one of the most important Italian museums in the world thanks to its huge Renaissance art collection. You can find work from well-known artists, such as Da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, and Botticelli here. The building itself is also a work of art as the inner courtyard is intricate and adorned with marble statues. The interior has floor-length windows, paintings on the ceiling, and stunning marble floors.
The Galleria dell’Accademia houses one of the most well-known sculptures in the world, the Statue of David. It was created by Michelangelo in the Renaissance period, so it’s a piece of art and history. It depicts David, the first King of Israel and has fantastic detail, especially for the time period it was made.
Try the local food
One of our favorite reasons to visit any city in Italy is the delicious food! Fresh pasta, pizza, and bread surrounding you no matter where you walk. One of Florence’s most well-known dishes is Lampredotto. Vegetarians beware! Lampredotto is a sandwich with the fourth cow’s stomach. It might not sound very appetizing, but it is. You’ll just have to try it out for yourself!
Another Florentine dish for meat-lovers is the Bistecca alla Fiorentina, a T-bone steak served rare. It’s a huge piece of meat, so try it with a friend or if you’re really hungry! For dessert, get a delicious, creamy gelato from one of the many shops around the city.
